イスラエル支援をきっかけに、トランプのMAGA運動が内部で“誰が本物の仲間か”を争い始めた。Axiosの記事は、このpurity testが運動の自壊を招きかねないことを示している。
米Axiosが報じた「MAGA’s war within（MAGA内部の戦い）」という記事が興味深い。トランプ前大統領の「Make America Great Again（MAGA）」運動が、いま内部で激しい対立に陥っているという内容だ。
この対立の中心にあるのが、記事でいうところのpurity testである。これは「真のMAGAかどうかを測る“思想的踏み絵”」、言い換えれば「『真のMAGA』認定の踏み絵」というニュアンスで、誰を本物の仲間とし、誰を異端として排除するのかを決める内向きの線引きだ。
■ イスラエルをめぐる分裂が引き金に
発端はイスラエル支援をめぐる意見の割れだった。イスラエルを強く支持する保守派と、「アメリカ・ファースト」を掲げて外国への関与を嫌う孤立主義派が衝突し、互いに「それでは本当のMAGAではない」と言い始めた。ここに反ユダヤ主義や宗教ナショナリズム、人種的な要素、さらにはトランプ個人への忠誠心が絡み、論争は単なる外交論ではなく“信仰の純度”を競う方向に進んでいる。
■ 反キャンセルカルチャーが「内輪キャンセル」に
もともとMAGAは「キャンセルカルチャーに反対だ」と言っていた。ところが今は、自分たちの中で「誰をキャンセルするか」をめぐって揉めている。白人至上主義者ニック・フエンテスをタッカー・カールソンが番組に呼んだことで、イスラエル支持派の保守団体と、さらに急進的なアメリカ第一派が一気にぶつかり、purity testが表に出た形だ。

ヘリテージ財団のケヴィン・ロバーツ会長は「彼の発言には反対だが、キャンセルするのではなく議論で対抗すべきだ」と述べたが、テッド・クルーズ上院議員は「ヒトラーを称賛し“グローバル・ジュウリー”を打倒するなどと言う人物と黙って同席するなら臆病者だ」と反発した。MAGA内部のpurity testは、長年の共和党系保守にまで火の粉が飛ぶ段階に入っている。

今回のAxiosの描き方が面白いのは、これを単なる派閥争いではなく「運動が宗派化していくプロセス」として見ている点だ。purity testは政策の違いを議論しているのではなく、「どこまで信じているか」を試している。トランプがもはや政策ではなくアイデンティティの象徴になっている以上、異論を唱える人は“信仰の純度が低い”として排除される。これは宗教運動の分裂とほとんど同じパターンだ。
■ 今後の予想：トランプ後の「正統性争い」
トランプというカリスマがいるうちは、運動はかろうじてまとまる。しかし彼が退場した瞬間、「誰が本物のMAGAを継ぐのか」という正統性争いが始まる。ニック・フエンテスが2028年の有力とされるJ.D.ヴァンスを標的にすると言ったのは、その“継承戦争”の初動に見える。
■ 日本への視点
この構図は、日本の親米保守の一部にも驚くほど似ている。トランプ的な言説を輸入した人たち、宗教右派、ネット保守、陰謀論系が「反リベラル」で一旦は並んだが、今度は「誰が真の保守か」で踏み絵をし始めている。つまりアメリカのpurity testを日本語環境でなぞっているような状態だ。ここで純度競争に入ると、運動は必ず分裂して小さくなる。

Axios’s piece “MAGA’s War Within” is striking because it shows the Trump movement turning inward. What once presented itself as a broad anti–cancel culture coalition is now consumed by something Axios calls a purity test.
In this context, purity test means an ideological litmus test — a way of asking, “Are you genuinely MAGA, or are you compromised?” It’s essentially a gatekeeping device: a way to certify who belongs inside the MAGA tent and who must be pushed out as impure.
■ How the split started
The immediate trigger was disagreement over support for Israel. Pro-Israel MAGA figures and America First isolationists clashed, each claiming to represent the “real” MAGA. Beneath that clash lie familiar currents: antisemitism, Christian nationalism, racial politics, and loyalty to Trump.
■ From opposing cancel culture to canceling each other
This is the irony Axios highlights: a movement born in opposition to cancel culture is now debating whom to cancel within its own ranks. Tucker Carlson’s cordial two-hour interview with white nationalist Nick Fuentes ignited a backlash from within the right — especially from Trump-friendly, pro-Israel groups like Turning Point USA. That backlash was, in practice, a purity test.
■ Mainstream conservatives pulled into a sectarian fight
Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts defended Carlson by saying bad ideas should be debated, not canceled. Senator Ted Cruz replied that sitting silently with someone who praises Hitler and talks about defeating “global Jewry” is cowardice. That exchange shows the MAGA fight has now reached legacy conservative institutions, forcing them to draw their own boundaries.
■ My take: once politics becomes faith, it starts to eat itself
What we’re seeing is not just a policy disagreement but the faith-ification of politics. The purity test is about the purity of belief — about whether someone fully aligns with the movement’s identity markers. That is why Axios’s framing feels religious: once the external enemy fades, the hunt for heresy begins inside.
■ What happens after Trump
As long as Trump is present, his personal charisma holds the movement together. But after Trump, there will almost certainly be a competition over who inherits “true MAGA.” Nick Fuentes saying that J.D. Vance will be a target in Iowa is an early signal of that succession struggle.
■ Why this matters for Japan
Some parts of Japan’s pro-U.S. conservative scene are importing U.S. right-wing frames almost wholesale. As in the U.S., different right-leaning groups in Japan — pro-Takaichi, religious conservatives, online nationalists — first united around being anti-liberal, but are now drifting toward “who is the real conservative?” That is the same purity-test logic. And, as in the U.S., it tends to shrink the movement rather than grow it.
